The September 2009 Sumatra earthquake was a 7.6 Mw earthquake which took place inSumatraIndonesia, at 17:16:10 local time on September 30, 2009 (10:16:10 UTC, September 30). The quake struck at sea, and is 50 kilometres (31 mi) WNW of Padang, Sumatra, Indonesia, 225 kilometres (140 mi) SW of Pekanbaru, Sumatra, Indonesia, 475 kilometres (295 mi) SSW of Kuala LumpurMalaysia and 960 kilometres (600 mi) NW of JakartaJava, Indonesia. At least 75 people have been killed as a result of the earthquake with thousands more believed to be trapped in collapsed buildings.
